  Being a part of  C.O.P.S.      -   "Citizens on Patrol!"

This coordinated effort, via the Alumni, is offered as one of many police sponsored operations. The primary purpose of a Citizens On Patrol unit (C.O.P.S.) is to help reduce crime and/or illegal drugs through cooperation with the Grandbury Police Department. Participants become "extra eyes and ears" for the Police Department in the local and surrounding communities. Well trained, private citizens volunteer to observe and report suspicious or criminal activities to the appropriate authorities. A police sergeant is assigned to the Alumni group as liaison, allowing us to provide well-trained volunteers, equipment and supplies while maintaining an in depth level of education and experience for all who are willing to help make things happen!

C.O.P.S. assists the police department in crime-prevention by actively patrolling neighborhoods, maintaining visibility, while observing and recording activities. Participants are trained how to report suspicious crime and other illegal activity to the police, and to whom.

The C.O.P.S. program increases the lines of communication between citizens and our local Police Officers by:

increasing direct interaction among citizens and officers;

informing and educating private citizens in the daily activities of the police department;

sharing with the concerned citizens that they do have a voice and it's time to be heard;

empowering, uniting and consolidating as many citizens as possible to support the police department.

Requirements for possessing a COPS certification includes having attended a Citizens on Patrol Academy and attendance at the mini Standard Operations mini academy sponsored by the Granbury Police Department and riding out with a police officer for a total of eight hours. As a result of our volunteers being involved in the latter two programs they receive on-going training in things like CPR and beginning First Aid to prepare them for any man made or natural disaster to occur within Hood County, or Granbury, Texas area.

C.O.P.S. VOLUNTEERS ARE NOT POLICE OFFICERS and ARE TRAINED TO OBSERVE and REPORT ONLY.
